Find answers to the most common questions about GPS Waypoints Lite functionalities and usage.
- What is GPS Waypoints Lite used for?
The application can support professional activities such as environmental surveys, engineering inspections, and geospatial data collection, as well personal activities including hiking, tourism, cycling and outdoor navigation. It is also used in education in some courses of GIS Data Acquisition & Management.
- What types of activities can GPS Waypoints Lite support?
The application can support professional activities such as environmental surveys, engineering inspections, and geospatial data collection, as well personal activities including hiking, tourism, cycling and outdoor navigation. It is also used in education in some courses of GIS Data Acquisition & Management.
- How accurate is the position information?
The positioning accuracy depends on the smartphone device and the acquisition mode being used. Typical smartphone GPS accuracy is usually above 2-3 meters under good signal conditions..
- Does the GPS Waypoints Lite app support external GNSS receivers?
Yes. The app supports external iOS-compatible GNSS/GPS receivers to improve positioning accuracy beyond the built-in iPhone GNSS. These receivers typically connect via Bluetooth (BLE) and provide GNSS data directly to the app. iOS-compatible external devices are generally those that:
- Support Bluetooth connectivity with iOS;
- Are designed for use with iOS mapping or GNSS applications;
- Provide GNSS position data in a format supported by the app
Some examples of iOS-compatible receivers include Garmin GLO 2, GNS 3000, Bad Elf GNSS receivers, and Trimble Catalyst DA2.
- Which file formats are supported for data import and export?
The application supports importing and exporting geospatial data in KML, CSV, GeoJson (Premium) and GPX (Premium) formats.
- Is iOS GPS Lite interoperable with Android GPS Waypoints?
These are two independent applications, but you can exchange data between them using the import/export features with GeoJSON, GPX, and KML formats. You can also use the Share Geodata Viewer option to occasionally exchange data between multiple devices.
- Can I use the application without an internet connection?
Yes. GPS Waypoints Lite can collect and store points and paths offline using the device GPS. However, internet access may be required for map visualization, sharing data, and requesting EO satellite imagery.
- Can GPS Waypoints Lite be used for aerial surveys with drones?
Yes. GPS Waypoints Lite can be used to plan, collect and manage georeferenced points that support aerial survey activities. Users can create waypoints, import coordinates from drone missions, and export collected data in formats such as KML, CSV, GeoJSON (Premium) and GPX (Premium) for use in mapping and drone-processing software. The app is particularly useful for defining points of interest, inspection targets and field validation locations before or after drone flights.
- Can GPS Waypoints Lite be used for marine and coastal surveys?
Yes. GPS Waypoints Lite can be used to collect and navigate to waypoints in marine and coastal environments, including harbors, beaches, rivers, lakes and offshore locations. Users can record positions, create routes and tracks, measure distances, and export geospatial data for further analysis. When used with compatible high-precision GNSS receivers (Premium version), the app can support professional marine surveying and environmental monitoring activities that require improved positioning accuracy.
